How to Paywall a Discord Server

A Discord paywall is not a wall in front of the server — it is a locked floor inside it. Free members see that the paid area exists; paying members get the role that opens it. Here is how to build one that runs itself.

Structure: what is free, what is paid

Keep a public lobby with rules, announcements and enough real activity to prove the server is alive. Put the value in clearly named locked categories that non-members can see but not read. A paywall nobody can see through does not convert — visible-but-locked is the whole trick.

The paywall is a role

Create one role per paid tier and set your premium channels to require it. That role is your paywall: grant it and the channels open, remove it and they close. Everything below automates granting and removing it.

Connect the checkout

Invite a payment bot, connect your Stripe account, map the product to the role. On Dues the whole setup is invite → paste Stripe key → create product → pick role, and your paywall goes live at dues.gg/yourname. Buyers pay on Stripe and the role lands in seconds; those not yet in the server are pulled in with it attached.

Make the paywall self-healing

The point of automating it is that lapses handle themselves: when a subscription ends, the role comes off and the channels re-lock without you touching anything, with access re-checked hourly. A manual paywall leaks the moment your server grows. One Discord gotcha: the bot's role must sit above the roles it manages in Server Settings → Roles.

What a paywall costs to run

The tool's fee is the recurring cost, so pick the model deliberately: percentage platforms take a cut of everything the paywall earns, flat-fee platforms charge a fixed plan and 0% of sales. Compare both on the comparisons page or estimate with the fee calculator.

Frequently asked

Can you put a paywall on a Discord server?

Yes. You gate channels behind a role and use a checkout that grants the role on payment and removes it when payment stops. Discord itself supports this through roles; the checkout and automation come from a payment bot.

Is it allowed to paywall a Discord?

Selling access to your own community is a normal, widespread use of Discord. Follow Discord’s Terms for what you sell and your local rules, and you are on solid ground.

What is the cheapest way to paywall a Discord?

At low volume, a percentage tool with no monthly fee can be cheapest; as you grow, a flat-fee plan that takes 0% of sales wins because the cost stops scaling with your revenue. Compare at your numbers before committing.

How do members get past the paywall after paying?

The role is delivered automatically the moment payment clears — usually within a couple of seconds — and the locked channels open for them. No manual approval step.
